Shakespeare gives us a taste of this hierarchical culture through his play The Tempest. He shows us how superior men perceived themselves in contrast to lesser beings due to their race, financial status, and gender.We also are shown those who had reason to feel superior yet treated others equally and with the respect due to them. In this culture, because someone is different, they are less of a human than you. Financial status also plays a major role in social classifications. During the time of The Tempest, Dukes and Earls, who were among the nobles, were considered to be superior even to other members of their own race. The nobles had servants and commoners who worked for them. Shakespeare shows us an example of this with the relationship between his characters of Sebastian and Antonio and of the Boatswain and the sailors. Sebastian yells at the sailors A pox o your throat, you bawling, blasphemous, incharitable dog!(I,i,40-41), implying that they are inferior and are there to serve him. Antonio also shows he believes himself superior by stating to the Boatswain Hang, cur! Hang, you whoresom, insolent, noise-maker. We are less afraid to be drowned than thou art.(I,i,43-45) These men were of the same skin color, hair texture, and eye color, but were treated inferior due to their financial status and inferior blood line. Women had also fallen victim to this hierarchial society. During this era women were considered to be objects and were treated as property. Shakespeare presents this in the treatment of Claribel, daughter of Alonso, and Miranda by their fathers. Claribel was married of to the King of Tunis, an African nation, merely for the gain of Alonso, the Duke of Milan, and his Lords. Their feelings are clear in Sebastians words Twas a sweet marriage, and we prosper well in our return. (II,i,69). We see by this that Caliban truly believes himself inferior even though his own intellect surpasses that of Stepheno and Triniculo. In todays society, treatment of inferiority is against the law and supposedly non-existent openly in society. We all know, however, that this hierarchial mind set still lurks around every corner in todays culture. It may not go as far as forcing someone to be your servant, but it lives in the form of discrimination and segregation. Because of many years of inferior treatment, many people feel they either can not succeed or that it will be more difficult for them than those of the right race or financial bracket. It is not that the people today feel inferior, its that they feel they will not get a fair chance. Its commonly believed that the people of inferior races or monetary status will get picked over for jobs or other discriminatory acts will be performed against them. The two cultures are quite different, but they also have some slight similarities. Our culture is over three-hundred years older than that of Shakespeare, which should make our society more mature in its actions and attitude. We should have learned that all men truly are equal and should be treated accordingly. But all three-hundred years has taught us was how to be more discreet in our actions and feelings by giving them pretty names or keeping them out of the public eye. This nation, from its inception had a lust for real estate. From the original chants of "manifest destiny" to the calls for the annexation of Indian territories our nation has been driven to acquire land. In this country's youth land was needed for economic expansion. However, by the end of the 19th century the entire continental United States was in our possession and the citizenry of this country turned their eyes out to sea. the United States no longer sought new lands to farm and work nor did they need new areas for their geological resources, the motives had changed. the United States was now driven by the temptations of world power and political one-ups-manship. the self-absorbed citizenry looked upon their intrusion into foreign areas as a moral obligation; to spread the words of democracy and Christ throughout the world. the Spanish - American War in the final years of the 19th century perfectly demonstrate this "new" Imperialism. In addition the American intrusion into Chinese affairs during the Boxer rebellion is also a proof for the new motives which governed our international attitude. By the end of the 19th century Spanish forces in Cuba were in all out battle with nationalist rebels. the Spanish army had tortured and killed thousands of innocent Cubans in their efforts to maintain control of Cuba. the American "Yellow Press" under the leadership of Pulitzer and others wrote horrific articles about the war in Cuba and called for the imposition of the United States into the matter under the flag of moral obligation. President McKinley and his war hungry Congress saw this as a perfect opportunity to have a "nice little war" and bolster the status of the United States in the international community. the war with Spain also gave McKinley am excuse to invade the Spanish controlled Philippine islands, an important naval site which would give the United States a voice in the far east. After, the United States Navy massacred the meek Spanish Armada and defeated the Spanish forces at San Juan hill, the little war was over. In the process the United States acquired the Philippine islands, a strong voice in Cuban affairs, and most importantly, status. the political support that McKinley received after the Spanish - American War was"worth" the loss of a few American lives. In addition the control of the Philippine islands gave the United States clout in the far east and a chance to spread the dreams of democracy and Christ. Clearly the forces working behind the Spanish - American War were far different then those that led our forces, only a few decades earlier, into the western frontier. Once the United States had established it's presence in the far east it felt obliged to oversee all that went on in the area. So when Chinese nationalists rebelled against the controlling government, the United States was most eager to get into the action. At the time the United States had issued the "Open Door Policy" which called for the equal financial treatment of all foreign governments. the Boxer rebellion, as it would later be called, gave the United States a chance to strengthen the unpopular policy. 2,500 United States troops were eventually sent into the area and gave the United States the power to push ahead its own personal agenda in China. the threat of political instability and the chance to further outstretch its political sphere of influence were the driving factors behind the United States' involvement in this affair. the Imperialistic McKinley government was not going to sit idly while the other nations of the world edged the United States out of China. Homeland Security - Response & Recovery - Essay Example It is then vital that upon actual operation, when all responding personnel come face-to-face with the families of the deceased, to understand that emotions are at their extremes. To assist everyone with this matter, keep in mind that there are five (5) processes or stages involved in dealing with their grief and loss. Remember the acronym DABDA; where D stands for denial, A stands for anger, B stands for bargaining, D stands for depression and A stands for acceptance (Kubler et al, n.d.). The first stage which is denial often makes everybody wonder if the situation really happened and why it did not happen to someone else. Denial makes an individual less perceptive about his or her surroundings and usually cannot relate with continuity because they are still in a state of shock. Most people who undergo this stage wonder if it is still possible to go on because the loss is quite unbearable to think of and survival is out of the question at the moment (Kubler et al, n.d.) The second st age of the psychological process of having to deal with death is anger. When in grief and in despair, a person usually forgets to be rational and throws caution to the wind. Feeling angry about the loss is often displaced to somebody else, making that person a target of emotional outbursts. Anger is a way of trying to reconnect and acknowledging the pain a person is feeling. While it may seem that this strong emotion can go on and on, it will dissipate in time and healing starts to set in. So when someone is angry due to a loss, it is advisable to just let the person rant on because suppressing it will only delay the natural healing process that the grieving person is unconsciously seeking for (Kubler et al, n.d.). The third stage is bargaining. This phase is characterized by asking the question â€Å"What if?† The â€Å"ifs† is the grieving person’s way of saying that he or she really just wants to remain in the past. It is a feeling that craves for the normal pattern of life the person was used to. It is also means to cover the guilty feeling of being alive, while his or her loved one has passed away (Kubler et al, n.d.). After bargaining, the grief stricken individual enters the fourth stage which is depression. This emotion must not be interchanged with the mental disorder depression since losing somebody to death is naturally depressing. Having a mental disorder of depression on the other hand is being saddened or dismayed for no particular reason at all. Depression is a normal feeling a person will have after the death of a loved one that will normally be forgotten after sometime when the healing process is completed (Kubler et al, n.d.). The fifth stage is acceptance. When reality really settles down, a person does not have any choice except to go on for there is nothing anyone can do to change what has happened in the past. While it may seem that the dead loved one is being betrayed by having to live on and continue to enjoy life; the fact is that life must go on. It is about time to start picking up the pieces and being at peace with the knowledge that life must be lived without the presence of the dead loved one (Kubler et al, n.d.).. Having explained the emotional and psychological aspects responders will be encountering at the
